Fear of Flying
Over the years I have seen a number of clients who suffered from fear of flying.
Hypnotherapy has been very effective in helping overcome those fears, and in many cases to swap them for a positive joy of flying.
As with so many other fears, there is often a combination of reasons, both rational and irrational.
Fear of Flying often falls into one or more of three types.
- Most common, the person has flown before, perhaps many times without a problem, and then for some reason or another, with each flight they get more and more nervous until they are no longer able to fly at all, or have to go through agonies on each flight.
- People who have never flown and are terrified at the very idea of it. These people often have have some other nervous problem, such as vertigo, a fear of heights, or some other phobia.
- The traveller is OK all the way up to the point where they shut the doors ready for takeoff. This fear is probably linked to claustrophobia, a fear of being trapped in a confined space, not the actual flying. These types are fixed by treating the underlying phobia.
Regardless of the type or reasons behind the fear, it usually becomes as debilitating as an anxiety disorder where the person’s mind continually churns over and over all the possible things that could go wrong. In effect mentally rehearsing a disaster movie, which feeds the fear.
Hypnotherapy gives the client an opportunity to change the movie to one where a much more positive outcome is imagined. This can sometime be achieved in just one session of hypnosis, but of course as always, each individual is different and many people will need a few sessions to achieve the results they desire.
